FCC to conduct nationwide test

The FCC will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) Oct. 4, beginning at approximately 2:20 p.m. The wireless test will be directed to all consumer cell phones and the EAS test will be send to radios and televisions.

The message set to appear on cell phones during the WEA test will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” The message will be available in Spanish for those who have selected Spanish as their preferred language.

The message set to be broadcast on radios and televisions will read: “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States from 14:20 to 14:50 hours ET. This is only a test. No action is required by the public.”

Flu Clinic schedule is now available online

Employee/Student Health will offer flu vaccine clinics beginning Oct. 3. Everyone with an Upstate ID is welcome and encouraged to get vaccinated. Participants sought for charity curling event

Participants are sought for a one-day charity curling event to be held Saturday, Nov. 4 at Utica Curling Club (8300 Clark Mills Rd., Whitesboro, N.Y.). Proceeds benefit Upstate’s Joslin Diabetes Center. Registration is $65 a person and includes day-of instruction and playing. The event is primarily focused on those who have never tried curling. Prostate cancer HealthLink seminar is Sept. 28

Hanan Goldberg, MD, MSc, will present Prostate Cancer and Advances in Surgical Treatment today, Sept. 28 at 5 p.m. via Zoom. Goldberg will discuss risk factors for prostate cancer, current statistics and screening methods, and treatment and surgical options. The seminar is presented thanks to a partnership with Upstate’s Men to Men prostate cancer support group. Clark Burn Center Trivia Night is Sept. 28

Clark Burn Center Trivia Night will be held today, Sept. 28 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Crazy Daisies Flowers and Garden Café, 4693 Kasson Road, Syracuse. Teams can sign-up as a group of 4 or 6. Individuals may sign up on their own and request to be added to a team of up to 6 or be part of a random team assignment. Tickets to participate in a 50/50 raffle, and various basket raffles will be available in person the night of the event. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winning trivia teams. All proceeds to benefit the Upstate University Clark Burn Center Fund to support: education and research, direct patient care needs, and raising community awareness. Spiritual Care event is Oct. 5

Upstate’s Clinical Pastoral Education training program will host a service of commission event for new chaplain interns Oct. 5 at noon in the Interfaith Chapel on the first floor of Upstate University Hospital. A celebration for the annual Spirit of Nancy Calhoun Award for exemplary service to the CPE program and students will also be held. This year’s award recipient is Mary Teelin, RN, from 5A. Incoming chaplain interns are: Jane Bronson, David Chachere, Jeremiah Deep, Rev. Shunjie Durham, Ceara Curry Kilpatric, Rev. Willie Mitchell, Ivan Ramos, Rev. Tom Zahradnik. All interns will train on various clinical units at Upstate through April 25.

Yoga for Everyone and Trauma Adapted Yoga classes for all staff and trainees will be held Oct. 6 at 4 p.m., Oct. 20 at 8:15 a.m., and then on the first Friday of every month at 8:15 a.m. in the Performance Center on the 11th floor of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Hydrocephalus Hike/Coins for a Cure is Oct. 7

The Upstate Chapter of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons will host the first Hydrocephalus Hike/Coins for a Cure event Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. at Tinker Falls in Tully. Pre-registration is $5 and on-site registration is $10. Participants who raise $30 or more will receive a free gift bag. Those who are unable to attend in Tully will have the opportunity to walk or hike locally. Proceeds benefit the Hydrocephalus Research Fund held at the Upstate Foundation. Upstate’s Mobile Mammography events are Oct. 16 and Nov. 10

The Upstate Mobile Mammography Van will offer a mammography screening event Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Upstate’s Retail Pharmacy (5000 W. Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse). This event is open to the Upstate community and the public. A second mammography screening event will be held Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Upstate Bone and Joint (6620 Fly Road, E. Syracuse). Sock Out Cancer—Kansas Meets Boston is Oct. 21

Sock Out Cancer will host their annual benefit concert Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse. This year’s show will feature John Elefante, former vocalist from Kansas, and Fran Cosmo, former vocalist from Boston. Respiratory Care Week is Oct. 22 to 28

Upstate’s respiratory therapists work in inpatient and outpatient settings and provide service to specialty areas, such as: PFT testing, smoking cessation, outpatient and inpatient bronchoscopy, and sleep study testing. Upstate employs 85 respiratory therapists and they are an integral part of patient care teams. Take the time to thank a respiratory therapist when you see one.

Dog Therapy 101 HealthLink is Oct. 23

HealthLink will host Dog Therapy 101 Oct. 23 from 5 to 6 p.m. at Oasis/HealthLink Learning Center, 6333 State Route 298, E. Syracuse (no virtual option). In collaboration with PAWS of CNY, learn how you and your pet may be able to offer pet-assisted wellness services throughout CNY.
