FCC to conduct nationwide test

The FCC will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) Oct. 4, beginning at approximately 2:20 p.m. The wireless test will be directed to all consumer cell phones and the EAS test will be send to radios and televisions.

The message set to appear on cell phones during the WEA test will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” The message will be available in Spanish for those who have selected Spanish as their preferred language.

The message set to be broadcast on radios and televisions will read: “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States from 14:20 to 14:50 hours ET. This is only a test. No action is required by the public.”

Participants sought for charity curling event

Participants are sought for a one-day charity curling event to be held Saturday, Nov. 4 at Utica Curling Club (8300 Clark Mills Rd., Whitesboro, N.Y.). Proceeds benefit Upstate’s Joslin Diabetes Center. Registration is $65 a person and includes day-of instruction and playing. The event is primarily focused on those who have never tried curling. Clark Burn Center Trivia Night is Sept. 28

Clark Burn Center Trivia Night will be held today, Sept. 28 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Crazy Daisies Flowers and Garden Café, 4693 Kasson Road, Syracuse. Upstate’s Clinical Pastoral Education training program will host a service of commission event for new chaplain interns Oct. 5 at noon in the Interfaith Chapel on the first floor of Upstate University Hospital. A celebration for the annual Spirit of Nancy Calhoun Award for exemplary service to the CPE program and students will also be held. This year’s award recipient is Mary Teelin, RN, from 5A. Incoming chaplain interns are: Jane Bronson, David Chachere, Jeremiah Deep, Rev. Shunjie Durham, Ceara Curry Kilpatric, Rev. Willie Mitchell, Ivan Ramos, Rev. Tom Zahradnik. The Informed Patient podcast

The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews with these specialists about a cancer that can affect male fertility; “stealth health” in the Upstate cafeteria; and sexual and public health, as portrayed in ads.

• Testicular cancer, which primarily strikes young men, is curable, says Upstate urologic cancer specialist Hanan Goldberg, MD, in an overview he gives of this type of cancer.
• Hospital food offerings have changed radically in recent years, as changing tastes and consumer demand mean healthier and more varied foods are available at Upstate, explain Upstate’s Daniel Ellithorpe and Eric Adams. Ellithorpe is the senior director of food services, and Adams is the system director of food service and hospitality.
• Sexual health and public health advertising looks and sounds different these days, influenced by new laws and the pandemic. Rebecca Ortiz, PhD, discusses these changes; she is an associate professor of advertising at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications.
