HealthLink seminar on mental health care is May 11

Thomas Schwartz, MD, professor and chair of Psychiatry, and Joseph Biedrzycki, DO, assistant professor of Psychiatry, will present Types of Mental Health Care Available for Adults, Teens and Children May 11 at 6 p.m. at HealthLink/Oasis Learning Center, 6333 Carrier Parkway, E. Syracuse. The seminar will also be offered online.

Drs. Schwartz and Biedrzycki will discuss the types of care available in Central New York, forms of care for various situations, and how to access that care more efficiently. The session is appropriate for anyone impacted by or interested in mental health care, including caregivers and professionals. The seminar is open to the public. Francis House, Upstate’s 2023 Your Cause charity, seeks volunteers to clean and update landscaping Saturday, May 20 beginning at 9 a.m. at Francis House, 108 Michaels Ave., Syracuse. Second annual Walk for Brain Cancer Research is May 21

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons Upstate Chapter and Colleges Against Cancer will host the second annual Walk for Brain Cancer Research May 21 at 9 a.m. beginning in Place Lot (formerly Quad 4 Lot) at Syracuse University. Registration is $5 and participants who raise $50 or more will receive a free T-shirt. Proceeds benefit Debbie’s Brain Cancer Research Fund held at the Upstate Foundation. Dunkin’ Iced Coffee Day is May 23

The Upstate Foundation will partner with Dunkin’ franchise owners and the Joy in Childhood Foundation for Iced Coffee Day May 23. One dollar from the sale of every cup of iced coffee sold on this day will benefit Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Visit any participating Dunkin’ location in Central New York or the Southern Tier and make a difference in the health and well-being of the region’s children and youth. Team Upstate 20th anniversary ice cream social is May 31

Team Upstate will celebrate its 20-year anniversary with an ice cream social May 31 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in 4414 B/C Academic Building. The event is hosted by the President’s Office. Nappi Wellness Institute open house is June 2

The Upstate community is welcome to an open house for the Nappi Wellness Institute June 2 from noon to 2 p.m. at 725 E. Adams St. The new 210,000 square-foot building will showcase innovative designs, expanded clinical space, and local artwork in the first WELL certified health care facility in New York state.

Staff will be available to answer questions about the new models of care. The event offers a unique opportunity to experience the space prior to start of clinical operations June 13.

Easy for You is June 13

Easy for You, Upstate's tobacco treatment program, will be held Tuesday, June 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Multidisciplinary Suite (C3068) on the third floor of Upstate Cancer Center. Those with an Upstate ID are welcome to receive help quitting tobacco, chew, and vape. Free nicotine replacement therapy is available. MIND Online smoking/vaping cessation program seeks participants

The Motivational Interviewing for Nicotine Dependence (MIND) Online program seeks participants for sessions beginning in June. Participants should be 18 or older, live in New York state, and currently smoke, vape or chew tobacco. Participants do not need to be ready to quit. Participants will be seen twice a week for 30 minutes on WebEx or Zoom for a total of 8 sessions, one hour each week. Medical students will be the primary therapists, under real-time supervision by Zsuzsa Szombathyne Meszaros, MD, PhD, DFAPA, professor of Psychiatry at Upstate.   • Childhood obesity discussion is May 10 at 10 a.m. for 10 minutes. Srdan Lukic, founder of Fight for Hearts, will share information on the connection between heart disease and childhood obesity. Lukic will share resources to make healthy changes.
  • Sleep Challenges for Women is May 11 at noon for 25 minutes. Antonio Culebras, MD, will provide information on and solutions for the various issues that create sleep challenges for women.
  • Standing sports workouts May 15 through 19 at 2 p.m. for about 10 minutes. Join Pathway to Wellness for standing exercises all week.
  • Mindful Leader: Cultivating Compassion is May 25 at noon for 10 minutes. Join Suzanne Brisk for a meditation practice designed to cultivate compassion.
  • 10 Minutes of Humor is May 22 at 10 a.m. One hundred laughs are worth 15 minutes on an elliptical machine. 
  • Clear the Air is the first Tuesday of each month at 11 a.m. beginning in the lobby of Upstate Cancer Center. Help pick up cigarette butts, beautify the Upstate campus, and tell everyone about nicotine replacement comfort kits. For more information, email Jackson Tarr at [email protected].

Advocates for Upstate welcomes eligible Upstate employees and volunteers to apply for Nellie Hurley scholarships for fall semester 2023 to be used towards undergraduate degrees in health-related fields. Applications will be accepted through June 30.
