President Dewan to deliver State of the University Address

Upstate President Mantosh Dewan, MD, will deliver the State of the University Address Wednesday, May 3 at 4 p.m. in Medical Alumni Auditorium, 1159 Weiskotten Hall. The State of the University address is the president’s annual report to campus on key projects and initiatives. For those unable to attend, a link for remote viewing will be provided prior to the address.

Nursing research and evidence-based practice website is now live

A website dedicated to nursing research and evidence-based practice (EBP) is now live. The site is designed to be a virtual toolkit to help nurses navigate research projects. Syracuse Workforce Run registration is open

The Syracuse Workforce Run will be held Tuesday, June 20 at 6:45 p.m. on Onondaga Lake Parkway in Liverpool. Registration is $39. Upstate Cancer Center FRC Open House is April 27

Sarah Lawler, clinical outreach librarian, will host an open house April 27 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Family Resource Center on the first floor of Upstate Cancer Center. Lawler will share information about the services she provides patients and their families. Attendees will receive a special book. HealthLink seminar on pain management is April 28

Vandana Sharma, MD, director of Pain Medicine Services, will present Pain Management Options Friday, April 28 at 2 p.m. via Zoom. Sharma will discuss options including medical management, spine injectors, neuromodulators, and surgery as possible ways to control debilitating pain. The seminar is open to the public. T-shirt sale is April 28

In recognition of April as Sarcoidosis Awareness Month, T-shirts will be sold April 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the second-floor lobby at Upstate University Hospital. The sale is hosted by Upstate Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep division.

Applications sought for Upstate Mentoring Program by April 30

Upstate Advocates fundraiser Spring Fling Raffle open now through May 2

Advocates for Upstate will hold an online Spring Fling Raffle. Purchase raffle tickets by May 2 at noon. Tickets are $10 each and offer three chances to win. A package, worth more than $300 includes gift cards from Home Depot, Ace Hardware, and Delaney Farms Nursery along with pots, lopper shears, gladiolus bulbs, hose, and gloves. Upstate Medical University to hold Commencement May 7

Upstate Medical University will confer degrees during Commencement Sunday, May 7. The event will be held at the SRC Arena and Events Center, 4585 W Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and ceremony starts at 10 a.m. The Commencement ceremony will recognize graduates from all four Upstate colleges: Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine and Nursing.

Peer Supporter Training is May 8, 11, 15

The final opportunities to receive peer supporter training by Jo Shapiro, MD, a renowned expert in peer support and clinician wellbeing will be held May 8, 11 and 15. The single 2.5-hour session is virtual and free. Those who have taken this training before are invited to re-enroll to refresh skills and knowledge. Easy for You is May 9

Easy For You, Upstate's tobacco treatment program, will be held Tuesday, May 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Multidisciplinary Suite C3068 on the third floor of Upstate Cancer Center. Those with an Upstate ID are welcome to receive help quitting tobacco, chew, and vape. Free nicotine replacement therapy is available. On My Own Time submissions due May 12

Upstate staff are invited to submit up to three pieces of their original visual art, created in the last 3 years, to the On My Own Time exhibit to be held at the Health Sciences Library. Several pieces from this exhibit will be selected to be part of a month-long finale exhibit at Everson Museum of Art this fall. To register, email Laura Benjamin at nemitzl@gz-jlwl.com. Pet a Pooch seeks session supervisors

Upstate’s Wellness Program has scheduled Pet a Pooch animal support sessions each month to help staff de-stress. Session supervisors are sought to escort dog volunteers and their humans to designated locations and stay with them during the sessions. Pet a Pooch sessions in need of supervisors are as follows:

Upstate University Hospital

  • July 3 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
  • July 5 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
  • July 28 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
  • Aug. 7 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Upstate Community Hospital

  • July 5 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
  • Aug. 2 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Upstate IMT launches webpage dedicated to Hyperdrive web browser in Epic

Over the last two years, IMT has slowly rolled out a number of changes to activities in Hyperspace in preparation for Epic's new web-browser, Hyperdrive. Hyperdrive hosts Hyperspace activities in a web-version to keep performance optimal, ensuring that Epic is running smoothly and securely.​

As IMT continues implementing gradual improvements, users will notice some changes to the activities they use day to day. These changes may include subtle differences between devices. A webpage dedicated to these changes, including frequently asked questions, tip sheets, and videos is available here: http://gnexc.gz-jlwl.com/training/intra/epic/hyperdrive.php. Users will receive emails from common Epic distribution lists.   • Mindful Leader—Micro Meditation on Sound is April 27 at 2 p.m. Take five minutes to practice focusing on sound, a gentle practice to help with focus and mindfulness. 
  • Get into the Zone with Emotional Intelligence is April 28 at noon. Mickey Lebowitz, MD, will discuss emotional intelligence, EI, and the zone. He will provide tips to help get someone back into the zone. 
  • Clear the Air is the first Tuesday of each month at 11 a.m. beginning in the lobby of Upstate Cancer Center. Help pick up cigarette butts, beautify the Upstate campus, and tell everyone about nicotine replacement comfort kits. For more information, email Jackson Tarr at TarrJ@Upstate.edu.

Nathan Ihemeremadu, from the Upstate Medical University Art Alliance, will share how art helps our wellbeing and offer an opportunity to try an artistic exercise to help us learn how easy it is to take an art break and feel the benefits of beauty and creativity in our daily life. Q and A will follow. 
  • Childhood obesity discussion is May 10 at 10 a.m. Srdan Lukic, founder of Fight for Hearts, will share information on the connection between heart disease and childhood obesity. Lukic will share resources to make healthy changes.
  • Sleep Challenges for Women is May 11 at noon. Antonio Culebras, MD, will provide information on and solutions for the various issues that create sleep challenges for women.
  • Standing sports workouts May 15 through 19 at 2 p.m. for about 10 minutes. Join Pathway to Wellness for standing exercises all week.
  • Mindful Leader: Cultivating Compassion is May 25 at noon. Join Suzanne Brisk for a meditation practice designed to cultivate compassion.
  • 10 Minutes of Humor is May 22 at 10 a.m. One hundred laughs are worth 15 minutes on an elliptical machine.

Teal There’s a Cure 5K Walk/Run is July 4

The 15th annual Maureen T. O’Hara Teal There’s a Cure 5k Walk/Run will be held Tuesday, July 4 at 8 a.m., in Marcellus Park, Marcellus. A virtual event will be held July 1 to 4. Proceeds benefit ovarian cancer research, education and awareness including research at Upstate Medical University and the Maureen T. O’Hara Teal There’s a Cure Fund, held at the Upstate Foundation, which provides ovarian cancer patient assistance.
